Residential

West Meadow, Walletts Court

Harwood are delighted to have been appointed to provide building control services on a beautiful one-off residential building, in a project that demonstrates our long-standing commitment to partnership.

Located within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), this project required the contractor to harmoniously blend design-led architecture into the tranquil English countryside.

Harwood was approached by TG Designer Homes, a specialist in bespoke, quality living and a long-standing partner.

The challenge of an unconventional project

The project, in St Margaret’s at Cliffe, centred around the construction of a single dwelling designed to be both a centrepiece, whilst also reflecting the natural environment surrounding it. The challenge was to juxtapose architectural innovation with the backdrop of the English countryside.

Adam Dodd, Operations Director at Harwood, having worked closely with TG Designer Homes previously, had developed a good understanding of their distinct architectural ethos and aspirations.

Anthony Ralph, Director at TG Designer Homes, describes Adam as often being his “first point of contact” for projects, particularly as Anthony’s projects tend not to be ‘conventional’.  TG Designer Home’s approach to design is always daring and innovative, resulting in a portfolio of unique, stunning buildings that turn heads.

At the core of the project in West Meadow was an existing bungalow. The objective was to transform it into a home that not only stands out aesthetically, but also enhances its environment.

The final design was an ingenious blend of the bungalow’s structure and new additions, including a temporary outbuilding concealed behind a flint wall, perfectly complementing the materials of the building.

The building’s predominantly timber framing gives it a rustic charm, whilst interwoven design components such as the cantilevered study, an external room housing an outdoor kitchen, and a leisure space, allowed the house to resonate with St Margaret’s unique landscape.

Combining experience and collaboration

Harwood’s extensive experience and proactive, flexible approach to helping clients navigate complex building regulations, provided the necessary support to turn this vision into a reality. Our approach has always been underpinned by professionalism and adherence to the Construction Industry Council’s Code of Conduct.

Our partnership with the team at TG Designer Homes ensured that the design of the house preserved the nature and character of St Margarets, ensuring every aspect was planned to echo the surrounding landscape, whilst also integrating contemporary design elements.

At Harwood we’re known for our adaptability and experience within a range of sectors. Our expansive portfolio ensures we cater to a broad spectrum of client needs. Be it services for fire safety, health and safety strategies, or a detailed understanding of environmental liabilities, we ensure clients are equipped with the expertise required for their projects.

The West Meadow project demonstrates how genuine collaboration, combined with a shared vision, can deliver stunning results.

In conclusion, Adam Dodd comments:

“This really was a fantastic project – recently winning the ‘Best Luxury House’ award at the What House? Awards – and it was a joy to see it come together in just a relatively short space of time. Having known TG Designer Homes for some years, we knew we’d work well together to ensure full compliance, and we were delighted to be able to lend our expertise with any building control enquiries.

“We believe this project at West Meadow really shows what can be achieved in terms of architectural innovation and collaborative success. Harwood’s alliance with TG Designer Homes has delivered a remarkable structure that meets environmentally conscious standards, and we look forward to working together in the future.”
